Barbara Thorndick referred to the recent riots and explained that whatever one's thoughts and beliefs on the causes, one of the biggest issues to consider was the effect of youth unemployment - now running at 20%.
Barbara explained how the Future Jobs Fund had helped many young people at her former housing association to gain work. The success rates at West Kent had been startling - 58% of the 76 trainees had gone on to employment or further education. An evaluation on the success of FJF across the country carried out by the Centre of Economic and Social Inclusion ('Inclusion') had produced similar findings. Barbara said that she had been so disappointed at the closure of the FJF scheme, she had contacted a number of social housing providers across the country who had had FJF trainees to see what could be done to facilitate a similar scheme. As a result they had formed a consortium, now 20 strong, with the aim of working with the Work Programme's prime contractors to offer paid temporary work.
